Use A LOT OF for affirmatives, countable or not: i.e. There are A LOT OF animals in Yellowstone park. There is A LOT OF water in the Amazon.
Use MUCH or MANY for questions. and negatives.
This is a rule:
In questions and negatives: If you can count it use MANY If you can't count it, use MUCH.
i.e. Is there MUCH whisky, water, traffic, spaghetti,excitement... Are there MANY cars, people, bottles of whisky...
Exceptions: We can count dollars and cents but we say "I don't have MUCH money. We can count hours and minutes but we say " Do you have MUCH free time?"
An expression: Use TOO MUCH & TOO MANY in the affirmative: There are TOO MANY fast food restaurants in this town! People eat TOO MUCH fast food.
