Level 5 Chapter 2 - Verbs of sensation with "like" "as if" etc.

Select the correct answer (or answers) from the choices given.

Using the verbs of sensation to convey an impression.

To look, to sound, to feel, to taste, to smell, to seem

If these verbs are used to express a sensation then, with an adjective there is nothing between the verb and the adjective;

"That music sounds good!"

If used with a noun or noun phrase, use" like":

"That music sounds like Beethoven to me"

If used with a verb phrase then the best usage is with "as if"

"That music sounds as if Beethoven wrote it.".

(American usage accepts "like" instead of "as if" for the latter.)

To seem is also used with an infinitive:

"That seems to be satisfactory."

"The waiter seems to have disappeared."

"The TV doesn't seem to work!"

The other verbs above are occasionally used in this way, but rarely.

More examples:

"This restaurand looks OK."

"It looks rather like one I went to in Newhaven."

"It looks as if they serve interesting local dishes."

"It seems to be very busy!"
