Level 5 Unit 4 - Adverb order.

There are frequently several places in a sentence to put an adverb

When Bond saw the gun he threw himself to the ground. He did it quickly:

Bond quickly threw himself to the ground.
Bond threw himself to the ground quickly.
Bond threw himself quickly to the ground.
Quickly, Bond threw himself to the ground.

- These are all correct.

When there is more than one adverb (or adverbial phrase) the choice of order becomes even richer,

Bond threw himself to the ground. He did it quickly. He did it when he saw the gun.

When Bond saw the gun, he quickly threw himself to the ground.
When Bond saw the gun, he threw himself to the ground quickly.
Quickly, when Bond saw the gun, he threw himself to the ground.

Bond quickly threw himself to the ground when he saw the gun.
Bond threw himself to the ground quickly when he saw the gun.
Bond threw himself quickly to the ground when he saw the gun.

- etc. Once again, these are all correct.

Note that emphasis will often decide the position.

Note also that, if you put an adverb, or an adverbial clause at the beginning of a sentence it is usual to put a comma after it.

Given the above it is impossible to provide an activity which covers every possibility. However there is an order of adjectives which is (probably) always correct:

Verb - Manner - Place - Frequency - Time - Purpose

Examples:
Mary runs enthusiastically through the woods every morning at dawn to keep in shape.
Old Mrs Brown hobbles slowly to the supermarket every day at 5pm to buy her bottle of gin.

Your job in this activity is to reconstruct the sentences respecting the above order. If you get a sentence "wrong" it only means that you have picked the wrong order using this criterion. Your sentence may still be correct. There are several adverbial clauses in each sentence but not necessarily all kinds. The final full stop is ommitted to make the task harder.

Remember to respect this order: Verb - Manner - Place - Frequency - Time - Purpose
