The Past Perfect in reported speech.

Use the first sentence in each pair as a guide to complete the second sentence.

In reported speech both the simple past and the present perfect can change into the past perfect.

I drank three cups of coffee yesterday. - He said he had drunk three cups of coffee the day before.

I have drunk three cups of coffee today. - He said he had drunk three cups of coffee that day.

Notice that the time clauses can change as follows:

Today - that day
This week - that week
Yesterday - the day before or the previous day.
Last week - The week before or the previous week,
Last month - the month before or the previous month
etc

With pronouns a contraction ('d) can be used instead of "have" (I had been or I'd been etc.)
