3 forms of "Used to"
1 - Used to
+ infinitive - a habit in the past.
BUT now finished:
"I used to smoke a pipe but now I smoke cigars."
"I used to cycle to work before I took up jogging."
"It used to take hours to do this procedure before we got
the new centrifuge."
2 - The same
form is also used for ongoing situations in the past BUT now
finished - especially with the verbs "to live" and "to work"
and similar usages:
"John used to work for a commercial laboratory before he joined
a government research team."
"The Matabele tribe used to inhabit this region."
This form is little used in questions
and less in negatives. Strict grammar should apply the form
"Used you to..." for the question and "I usen't
to" for the negative but in modern usage you will hear:
" I didn't use to smoke at all."
"Where did you use to live?"
(Being rare there are no examples of this question form in
this activity.)
3 -
To be used to + noun or gerund:
an acquired habituation, accustomisation, adaptation or acclimatisation:
"Indians are used to spicy
food."
"He's only been in Rome for a few days: he's not used to the
traffic yet."
4 - To get
used to + noun or gerund: the acquisition
process leading to the above:
"I can't get used to my new glasses!"
"If you take sleeping pills every day your body will get used
to them and they won't have any effect."
