Social Situations Unit 12 - Homographs

These are words which are written the same but have a different meaning. Some of them are pronounced differently according to the meaning.

Here are some examples used in the activity you are doing.

 

 
When you open a bottle of fizzy drink the gas separates from the liquid making bubbles.

 

North Macedonia and the Greek province of Macedonia are quite separate.

 

We're having perfect weather.

 

We need to perfect the manufacturing process before we put the medecine on the market.

Mary is in tears because she has torn her new dress.

 

It's fashionable to tear your jeans before you wear them.

 

To tear (usually followed by " into" or another preposition) , by extension can mean to attack or run quickly.

When the doors opened the waiting crowd tore into the shop.

Johnny! Don't tear about the house like that!

The Light Brigade - tearing into battle.

 

If I were you I should ask for a transfer to another department.
