Turn on:
to start something electric, gas, water etc. "I turned on the light, the
TV, the tap, the gas, etc. Can be used metaphorically, "He turned on the
charm."
Turn off.
1 -The opposite of
the above 2 - With a pronoun can mean to disgust: "The soup looked good
but the smell turned me off." 3 -also "To turn off the road" is to leave
a road onto a smaller one or a parking place.
Turn into:
Transformation: "The magician turned the coin into an egg.", "A pupa turns
into an adult insect.", "Dr Jekyl turned into Mr Hyde.", "Over millions
of years wood can turn into coal."
Turn down:
1 - To reduce the speed, volume or flow of (especially) electrical items,
water or gas. "Turn down the heat please."
2 - To refuse something or someone. "He applied for the job but was turned
down.".
Turn up:
1 - The opposite
of the above: "If you turn up the gas too high you'll burn the cake."
2 - For someone to appear suddenly or surprisingly "Guess who turned up
at the party."
Turn in:
To submit an object, or a completed piece of work, to a superior or an
authority. "He always turns in his essays late!", "If anyone finds my
keys please turn them in to the office.". Sometimes people are turned
in: "He drove to the police station and turned himself in."
Turn over,
To rotate in a vertical direction. "He turned over stones to find worms
to go fishing.", "John always sleeps on his right hand side and never
turns over." NB. An apple turnover is a cake served upside down rather
like tarte tatin.
Turn round (sometimes
around):
To face in the opposite direction or to rotate. "This street is a cul-de-sac.
You'll have to turn the car round.", "Open an old clock and you can see
all the wheels turning round." "The Earth turns round the Sun."
Turn out:
1 - Synonym of "off" for light (but not gas/heat etc)
2 - The impression something gives, especially if unexpected: "The hotel
turned out to be quite good.", "The 'big surprise' turned out to be an
engagement ring!", This 'flu epidemic is turning out worse than anyone
expected."
